Instructors: Using assignment groups in Canvas to weight Learnvia grades

Modified on Wed, 3 Dec at 11:14 AM

You can use assignment groups in Canvas to control how much each assignment is worth toward the final grade.

If you use Learnvia alongside other homework systems, each system may send a different total number of points to Canvas. For example, Learnvia assignments might total 1000 points, while another tool only reports 100 points. If you want both systems to count equally—say 50% each—you need a way to balance these uneven point totals.

Canvas assignment groups let you do exactly that. By placing assignments into groups and applying weights, you control how much each group contributes to the final grade, regardless of the raw point values coming in.

How to Set Up Assignment Groups

  1. In Assignments, create groups. Ex: "Learnvia Lessons", "Learnvia Homework"
  2. Place each assignment into the appropriate group.
  3. In the Gradebook, Canvas will automatically display a subtotal column for each group on the right, showing either points or percentages.
  4. Set the percentage weight for each assignment group to match how much you want that group to contribute to the overall course grade.
