How student data is used for research
Who this is for: students, instructors, and anyone evaluating Learnvia.
Learnvia studies how people learn, and student work in the courseware is part of how we do that. Research use of your data is something you choose, separately from using the courseware itself.
You are asked to opt in or opt out. If you decline, you keep full access to the courseware and your grade is unaffected. You can change your decision at any time, and the most recent one applies.
How consent works
When you access your course, you are shown a research consent form, separate from the platform terms of use. You choose whether to agree, and your decision is recorded. Students who decline are excluded from research exports. You can opt in or out repeatedly if you change your mind.
This approach is reviewed and approved by Carnegie Mellon University's Institutional Review Board.
What is shared, and what is not
If you consent, your interaction data can be shared with authorized learning science researchers, specifically CMU's DataShop and LearnSphere platforms. That data records how you worked through the courseware: the questions you saw, what you submitted, hints you requested, and how you moved through the material.
Before it is shared, each consenting student is assigned a participant identifier. Your name and email address are not included in research exports. The identifiers let researchers follow a learner's progress over time without knowing who that learner is.
Limits on how your data is used
- We do not train or fine-tune AI models on student or institutional data. The AI features use course content provided at the time of the request, not your data as training material.
- Name and email are collected to make the courseware work. They are not available for research.
- Research outside these practices happens only with review by CMU's review board or a partner institution's.
- Findings may be published to benefit education generally, with privacy protections for learners kept in place.
FERPA and your school
For education records we receive from your institution, Learnvia acts as a School Official with a legitimate educational interest under FERPA, and we meet the obligations FERPA places on that role.
Asking for your data to be deleted
You can request deletion of your data at any time by contacting support@learnvia.org. One limit is worth stating plainly: data already shared with the research platforms above cannot be pulled back through Learnvia, and has to be handled with those systems separately.
For the full picture, see the Learnvia Privacy Policy and what student data is collected. Questions can go to support@learnvia.org.
