Intro
Learnvia's Fall 2025 pilot gives select instructors early access to innovative free-to-student Calculus 1 courseware by the new non-profit Learnvia (a Carnegie Mellon Univ collaborative). The goal of the pilot is to get feedback from students and instructors to improve the courseware's ability to support instructor's goals and student success.
Courseware
Learnvia's Calc 1 courseware (aka "a Learnvia Kit") has full contents with chapters: (1) Intro, (2) Limits, (3) Derivatives, (4) Applications of Derivatives, and (5) Integrals, each ~10 modules. A Kit is configurable to match a course's syllabus, usually one chapter/week. The pilot includes only Derivatives modules, with only one module per chapter. A module has 3-6 Lesson Activities (~15 min each), and 1 Homework Activity (~20 min).
Lesson activity: Brief text, 1-2 minute video, ~15 questions (Qs), with feedback. Correct completion yields points. Unlimited attempts; hints/answers available with no penalty.
- Homework activity: ~20 Qs, auto-graded upon submission, most randomized. Unlimited attempts; solutions available with no penalty, but auto-generates another Q; correct completion yields points.
- Self-quiz activity: ~10 Qs, auto-graded upon completion, most randomized. Unlimited attempts; solutions available after completion; attempting question yields points.
The courseware has a side panel with a content-aware AI Tutor, plus a Discussion Forum.
Pilot requirements
Points: Instructors must assign course points for module completion, requiring at least 3 modules, one of which must be "Chain rule".
Feedback: Instructors should ensure students extensively use the Kit's embedded "Feedback" buttons to suggest improvements throughout (or point out things they liked). Instructors should do the same.
Surveys: Instructors and students should complete a few surveys Learnvia will provide during the term. Student surveys only require a few minutes. Instructor surveys may be 10-20 min.
Meetings: Instructors should participate in at least 1 (possible a few) meeting, usually 1 hour or less.
AI Tutor and Discussion Forum usage are encouraged but not required.
Setup
Canvas course: Normally a Learnvia Kit appears as a tool in a course's Canvas (or other LMS). That takes time, so the early pilots are using Learnvia's Canvas. Instructors provide their course's self-enroll link to students (e.g., in their syllabus, or via an announcement) and point students to Fall 2025 Student Info one-pager for overview/instructions.
Configure: After deciding which modules to require, instructors use the Kit's "Configure" to: (1) Group same-due-date modules, (2) Set other modules to "Optional" or remove them.
Plan: After configuring, instructors use the Kit's "Plan" to set due dates. Note: Plan is designed for weekly recurring patterns that occur in normal (non-pilot) courses. Make selections, then modify individual due dates. A chapter's Lesson vs Homework due dates can differ.
Grades: Connect to Learnvia's Canvas gradebook (here's how), export, then import to your gradebook.
Help: Learnvia staff is happy to help with Configure and Plan.
